A Place To Call Home

It has been reported that Slumdog Millionaire child star Azharuddin Ismail, age 10, finally has a home. He and his family moved into an apartment on Saturday. Their new residence was set up last month by filmmakers Danny Boyle and Christian Colson through the Jai Ho Trust. The apartment with running water and electricity. is located in Santa Cruz West, a suburb north of the Mumbai slum Ismail previously lived in. Upon turning 18, Ismail will take control of the deed to the apartment. In May, Ismail's old home was demolished in the middle of the night after city authorities claimed it to be illegal. So this is a great turnaround for the child actor.

The Slumdog Millionaire filmmakers were moved to create the Jai Ho Trust after learning of the terrible living conditions Ismail and his costar, Rubina Ali, faced in Mumbai. So far, $742,000 has been set aside to set up a five-year healthcare and education program for the children. Ali is supposed to be receiving a new home as well.

This is great for the child actors. When I first read about how they were still living in the slums after the great success of Slumdog Millionaire, I was outraged. How in the world did they not have a decent place to lay their head down at night? It was just sad to see this happening. I just feel like children should have a good place to call home. But throughout the world, even in America, children still are suffering. I'm glad to see that things are changing for these child actors. Kudos to Boyle and Colson for getting them and their families taken care of. I wish them all the best.
